Kalahandi was a princely state in British India and merged with Orissa State. At the time of merging, the Kalahandi District comprising the current Kalahandi and Nuapada Districts. The judgeship of Nuapada was separated from Kalahandi on 7th July, 2012. The District Court is functioning in a new building at Bhawanipatna. It has 11 well-furnished Court Halls having facilities like office, library, waiting hall for the witnesses, Bar Hall, lift, drinking water, ramp for differently abled persons and separate washroom facilities for differently abled persons. The building was inaugurated on 6th March, 2021. 32 different Courts are functioning in the Judgeship with outlying stations at Kesinga, Madanpur-Rampur, Dharamgarh, Junagarh, Kokasara, Jaipatna, T.Rampur and Lanjigarh.

678 witnesses were examined in Vulnerable Witness Deposition Centres in 2024.
